I met with Joe Perotto. He was quick to tell me about being #1 for last year in YOY results. I complimented them and we discussed the need to be a "repeat". Joe was very serious about "going for it" to do a lot of cherry promotions in 2014 to sustain the sales needed to exceed last year. We discussed their promotions from last year and he told me they did a Red and Rainier promotion at the same retails. They made more profit on the Red than on the Rainiers. Although they sold a huge amount of Rainiers at a low to no gross, but the sales of the Red cherries were greater than the Rainiers, and they made a profit on the Reds. Great idea! We talked a lot about the late season opportunity to promote and building a customer base of full season cherry shoppers. We discussed additional sales building incentives including "in and out" 2#-3# packages, secondary displays and working with new varieties. Joe indicated that they are opening new Mariano's stores so fast and they are almost all very successful.
