Rep Call
Met with Matt Dee at his office. He told me that the Donelan brothers sold the company to another group, and his responsibilities have increased. He is now basically the GM, but still is also the Director of Produce. Donelan's has had a Market Basket open up down the street from their flagship store a couple of years ago, but they feel they are offering a more personal experience and have been able to maintain many of their loyal customers. Print ad is still their primary means of promotion, but they have adjusted the size of the ad from 6 pages every week to 24 weeks of 4 page ads, and 8 weeks of 6 page ads. In addition, they now have several periods where they run 2 week ads rather than all one week ads. They still do traditional distribution of the circular, but the mailing list has gone from 75,000 households to 48,000 households, with an expansion of the households that are emailed the circular. They have suggested to their customers that printing and mailing the circular is not eco friendly, and their customers seem to be understanding. In addition to print, they are in the process of developing promotional opportunities through their website, facebook and apps. I told Matt that we would be interested in participating in their electronic promotions once they have been developed.
