Rep Call
Met with Craig Minichiello at his office. Craig is a good supporter of NW Cherries and he visited Yakima last year. However, Craig believes that he cannot advertise cherries when they are above $3.99 or $4.99. He still continues to promote in store with entrance displays and larger displays in the produce department but does not feel he can advertise at those prices. He appreciates the financial support that we offer and hopes to be able to take advantage of that support this year. Craig also mentioned that they had a problem last year where lots of bags of cherries were left on the counter near the check stands. Craig feels that when the customer realizes how much a 2.2# bag of cherries costs, they leave them behind. They are packing some smaller 1# clamshells at the stores to give customers an option but would like to see the industry consider a smaller bag. We talked about all the difficulties that could cause, but he still wanted me to suggest it as he does not see the problem going away, and it is getting difficult and more expensive for them to do the smaller packages at store level. They had done overwrap for years, but feel that the cherries don't last as long when in overwrap, so they have discontinued that.
