Visited with Keith Frosceno at the Big Y Office. Big Y is a good supporter, building large entrance displays throughout the season and consistently pricing at $3.99, with occasional weeks at as low as $1.99. Keith says that he understands the value of cherries at retail and the return to the produce department. He will be prepared to start featuring as soon as his shipper (Stemilt) tells him it’s time. I explained the issue with sustainability and he says that he hears that concern from other growers as well, mostly local ones. He has no issue with working cherries close and will adjust his retail to match the FOB but obviously pays the lower price when the market falls. He didn’t advertise as often last year as he normally does, but did keep the large entrance displays in place even if they were not on ad, and he will try to advertise more this season.
